In French words have genders. They are either masculine or feminine. This is important to remember when you want to say for example a book or a chair.
In French the word book is masculine so we say un livre.
In French the word chair is feminine so we say une chaise.
To check if words are masculine or feminine you need a dictionary.
When you look a word up, for example coke you will see m this means the word is masculine so you will say un coca.
When you look a word up, for example beer you will see f this means the word is feminine so you will say une bière.
