Progression Project

A targeted project to consider what makes a difference to learning experiences at the college.

This project was set up in order to give a voice to some of the people using the college with regard to what makes a difference to their experiences here; what helps them to progress both educationally and personally, as well as what hinders their progression and any ideas learners have about what else could be done to encourage progression.

The project interviewed learners from three target areas:

  • New Directions- a programme designed specifically for people with mental health issues.
  • Inward House- a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre.
  • Skerton Family learning centre- part of the outreach programme which provides education for communities in need.

Several strengths were identified across all areas. Primary amongst these were the college staff, particularly some key members who are extremely important and inspirational to a number of learners.

Other positive factors identified as affecting and encouraging progression were: forming a group identity on courses, having the opportunity to study, and the many different roles that the college plays in peoples lives such as the social aspects of college, the opportunity for work experience and the individual approaches and flexibility available.

A number of barriers were suggested such as the difference between new direction classes and mainstream classes in terms of class size, available support and staff sensitivity. Other barriers identified were more physical in nature such as the timing of classes, the lack of crèche facilities, transport and course fees.

Some suggestions were made as to how progression could be further encouraged and these included familiarising vulnerable learners with facilities and staff before embarking on courses, the introduction of a buddy system with people already on courses 'buddying up' with new learners for the first few weeks to help them ease into the college and courses, as well as the introduction of a 'greeter', a familiar face to liaise between staff and students.
